Reasons For Using Homeopathy In Pain Management

Homeopathy for Pain Management

Homeopathy v Allopathy

If you are familiar with homeopathy, it will come as no surprise that there is a strong case for considering its use in pain management.  After all, as a homeopath, it is commonly the driver for patients to seek homeopathic care with me.  So, why consider homeopathy rather than allopathic (pharmaceutical derived) medicines?

Most people’s perception of pain management is that of swallowing a pill.  An instant solution to fix a problem.  What is wrong with this?  Nature, that undisputed genius to whom no human will ever equate, has given us pain as a warning light, to let us know that something is not right.  OK, so why would the solution be to turn off the light and ignore the problem?  Is that not setting the table for things to get worse?

Why Most Prescription Drugs Are Not A Good Idea

Most of us are aware that there are ‘side effects’ to taking pharmaceuticals.  Actually, more specifically, they cause changes to the biochemistry of the body so they always have effects which are often undesirable. Some of the problems with the use of non-steroid anti-inflammatories (NSAIDS) is described in this extract from a paper published in a medical journal in 2016:

‘Preventable adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are responsible for 10% of hospital admissions in older people at a cost of around £800 million annually. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are responsible for 30% of hospital admissions for ADRs, mainly due to bleeding, heart attack, stroke, and renal damage.1In primary care 6% of patients prescribed NSAIDs reconsulted their GP with a potential ADR over the next 2 months. Most of these ADRs are avoidable because vulnerable groups and drug interactions can be predicted. Given that over 15 million NSAID prescriptions were dispensed in England in 2014, even a low rate of ADRs translates into a major cumulation of harm. Despite contraindications and guidance for the use of NSAIDs, their use in high-risk groups remains substantial and there has been no overall reduction in volume of NSAID prescribing.’

There are many concerns here but the fact that the stated end result of this is harm is surely extremely significant?  And then there is the mind-boggling resulting cost, financial and human.  Most of us are aware too of the burgeoning opioid crisis which is regularly featured in the mainstream press. Apparently, the UK now has the highest rate of prescription use per capita in the world.  Surely, not a badge of honour?

What About Homeopathy

Homeopathy has been used for over 200 years and is part of the health care system in many countries such as India and parts of Europe.  The database of the social security system in France, where citizens can choose a homeopathic or conventional family doctor, shows that homeopathy provides comparable results in pain management to conventional medicine while significantly reducing the use of conventional painkillers.  Whilst chronic conditions require the homeopathic prescription to match the individual symptom picture, in acute trauma a specific remedy can be used for that particular situation successfully for most individuals.

Sceptics who discredit homeopathy as nothing more than placebo, have yet to explain how this relates to animals who respond positively to homeopathic medicines.  Research on the use of homeopathy for animals has been shown to be positive.
